By Jim Butman

Kohl's Corp. today reported that its same-store sales increased 4.2 percent in October from the same period a year ago.

The Menomonee Falls-based department store chain's total sales in October increased 11.4 percent to $1.2 billion from $1.1 billion a year earlier.

The company's third-quarter comparable store sales increased 8.5 percent, and its total sales increased 16.6 percent. The firm's year-to-date comparable store sales are up 6.9 percent and its total are up 15.6 percent.

"We are pleased with our sales performance in October and for the third quarter," said Larry Montgomery, chairman and chief executive officer of Kohl's. "Once again, we exceeded our comparable store sales guidance of 2 percent to 4 percent for the quarter. We continue to see consistency in sales performance across all lines of business and in all regions of the country. We believe we are well-positioned for the upcoming holiday season."

In October, Kohl's opened 65 new stores in 30 states across the nation during the company's largest one-day opening in its history. Kohl's now has 814 stores in 45 states, compared with 731 in 41 states at the same time last year.

The company will open three additional stores on Thursday, Nov. 9.
