'The Pig' to return to Watertown

By Jim Butman

Four years after leaving Watertown, 'The Pig' will return. Fresh Brands Distributing Inc. announced that a new Piggly Wiggly store will be built along the Highway 16 bypass on the northeast end of Watertown.

The 30,000-square-foot store will open in June 2007. A groundbreaking ceremony will take place Wednesday, Oct. 11.

The new store will include standard Piggly Wiggly features, including "Pampered to Perfection" produce, a bakery and delicatessen department, a fresh meat department and a liquor department.

A Piggly Wiggly store on Watertown's Main Street closed in 2003.

"Piggly Wiggly was a great place to shop in the local community from 1971 to 2003," said Gary Suokko, vice president of retail operations for Sheboygan-based Fresh Brands. "We have had numerous requests from the community to bring 'The Pig' back to town."

The new store will be owned and operated by Jeff Tate and Dennis Vanden Heuvel.
