Mortara Instrument Inc. plans expansion

By Jim Butman

Milwaukee-based Mortara Instrument Inc. plans to expand its 38,000-square-foot headquarters at 7865 N. 86th St. with a 26,000-square-foot addition.

Mortara designs and manufactures diagnostic medical equipment. The building addition will provide space for the company's growing engineering and manufacturing operations and will allow it to consolidate warehouse space. Mortara's revenues have been growing by about 20 percent a year in recent years, said Brian Brenegan, vice president of finance for the company.

"We have had double-digit growth for the last five years," Brenegan said. "We are running out of room and we expect the growth to continue."

About 100 people work at the Milwaukee headquarters, and the company plans to add about 30 employees there in the next three to four years, he said. Mortara's international business is growing significantly, especially as developing cultures in Central America, South America, India and China catch up with the rest of the world by acquiring more medical equipment, Brenegan said.

To accommodate its expansion, Mortara is applying for a $1.5 million loan from the Milwaukee Economic Development Corporation (MEDC). The MEDC's loan and finance committee will review the application this afternoon.
