Milwaukee Ald. Tony Zielinski will conduct a public meeting on Monday, Sept. 18, to discuss the Mod Lofts, a $7 million mixed-use development project proposed for the Bay View neighborhood.
The five-story complex would create a mix of retail and apartments on a vacant parking lot at 2254 S. Allis St. The five-story structure would be designed by Vetter Denk Architects Inc. and would utilize green architectural design features, including green roofing and water-saving plumbing. The structure actually would provide additional public parking spaces at the location, Zielinski said.
"This development would boost population density in the South Kinnickinnic Avenue business district - a key plus - and it would bring a well-designed, aesthetically pleasing, environmentally-friendly building to this up-and-coming neighborhood," Zielinski said. "I think a $7 million development of this quality would go a long way toward boosting business development along South Kinnickinnic."
Zielinski also said the Mod Lofts development would help ease development pressure along Bay View's lakefront, where developers are constantly eyeing green space for potential future development.
"This project shows that Bay View can help expand the city's tax base with solid planned development that doesn't threaten our valuable green space near Lake Michigan," Zielinski said. "But I want public input on the proposal before we go any further."
Earlier this year, Zielinski introduced a Milwaukee Common Council resolution requesting development proposals for the parcel, which has been a city-owned parking lot for 47 years. The Mod Lofts project was selected by Department of City Development officials as the best proposal for the site.
The alderman has scheduled a public meeting on Sept. 18 to inform, educate and solicit public feedback on the proposal. The meeting will start at 6:30 p.m. in the auditorium at Bay View High School, 2751 S. Lenox St.
