Description: The public opening for Wade House historic site’s new $12 million Visitor Center and Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum will be Saturday, June 8, just two days after the 60 year anniversary of the historic site’s original dedication in 1953. The public opening will feature guided tours from architects and engineers that worked on the new site.
Wade House is an 1860s stagecoach inn that was built to serve traffic along the plank road that connected Fond du Lac and Sheboygan. Guests can tour the inn, as well as the Dockstader Blacksmith shop, with guides clothed in period dress to learn about life during the Civil War years. The Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum on site houses the state’s largest collection of antique carriages and working wagons. The historic site also includes the recently reconstructed Herrling sawmill, one of the few working, water-powered sawmills of its kind in the nation. The new Visitor Center includes a multi-tiered orientation to the historic site and its themes, a museum store, café and ticketing. The Wesley W. Jung Carriage Museum brings the compelling stories within the world of horse-drawn transportation to life in vignette settings, interactive exhibits and hands-on experiences within a space environmentally designed to showcase these treasures for generations to come. The 38,000-square-foot complex has transformed the visitor experience, offering a new portal to the site from which visitors will board a horse-drawn wagon, travel through the woods and over the Mullet River to the core of the historic site. 2013 TOP 10 AWARDS
